Two beautiful Baroque palaces set amongst a splendid garden
Word to the wise: If you’re a fan of Baroque painting, check out the lower palace. If artwork from the 19th and 20th centuries interests you more, then explore the upper palace, with works by Klimt, Monet, Renoir and Schiele, as well as many others.

Belvedere Castle, with its wide and open spaces, is comprised of two picturesque palaces. In addition to these grand buildings, you’ll come across a wonderful alpine garden with more than 4,000 plant species from the Alps and the surrounding environment. The garden makes for a pleasant stroll, especially on a warm summer’s day.
Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned the construction of his summer residences in the early 1700s, with the final stones set in place in 1723. The lower Baroque palace became the main residence, while the upper palace was reserved for special occasions, and is therefore more ornate in appearance. Both structures now serve as museums for Austrian paintings, collectively known as the Austrian Gallery.
