A royal park of absolute splendor – covering a sprawling space of 350 acres, Retiro Park is the main park in the Spanish capital. The park was designed by the chief minister to King Philip IV. Dating back to 1630-40, the park took a different shape in the beginning of the 20th Century.
The park is adorned by many statues, fountains and small gardens. The Retiro Pond is the main attraction here. It stands near the monument to King Alfonso XII. The 19th Century Crystal Palace is the other spot worth visiting. It was built in 1887, and was once the home to exotic plants and flowers. The neighbouring Velázquez Palace is a space used for exhibitions and art displays.
The park is a recreational space for many residents. From morning joggers to leisure cyclists, and even fitness enthusiast working with weights, everyone from the vicinity tends to visit the park. The park is also home to the annual book fair, and conducts many shows and events in season. For visitors, there are row boats that can be used to paddle around the pond.
