Visit to the famous square of Spain – Plaza Mayor is the main square of the capital. Just a short walk away from Puerto de Sol, the foundations of the square was laden when Phillip II moved the capital to Madrid. Since its inception, Plaza Mayor has taken many forms and the space has been used for a number of reasons. From bullfighting to royal weddings, this square has been a witness to all.
Surrounded by incredible architecture, it is easy to feel the past grandeur of the place just by standing in the middle of the square. The statue of Philip III marks the centre here. Since the square has many entry and exit points, feel free to explore. There are a number of cafes and bakeries that add to the charm of the place. Once you have marveled at the frescos in the balconies here, you can make your way for Mercado San Miguel. This was an old market place which has been restored for over six years. Now it is one of the prime food markets in the capital and worth a visit.
