Nearly every visitor to Indonesia who escapes Bali visits Java and takes a trip to Borobudur, Indonesia’s most iconic temple. However, what they don’t realise is that they are missing out on what is possibly the coolest and quirkiest site in all of Indonesia.
Welcome to Gereja Ayam, which translates to Chicken Church. After receiving a vision from God in the 1980s, an elderly man purchased the land shown to him and built a unique building that was designed to look like a dove and be an omnistic church. By the mid-1990s, he ran out of money and the property was abandoned. Now it has be “re-discovered”.
Make sure to dress accordingly, as a short hike is necessary to reach the Chicken Church.
