Cuban sangas on the go

Word to the wise: Paseo is frequently crowded and only takes cash, so come prepared for both situations.

Popular plate: The Caribbean sandwiches, including the Cuban roast and midnight Cuban press, are top picks.

This hip, Rastafarian find in Fremont has elevated sandwiches to an art form. Situated in a tiny shopfront with no sign, Paseo gained notoriety via word of mouth. The national press eventually sniffed it out, and catapulted it into a major culinary destination.

The excellent Cuban sandwiches are totally worth battling the crowds. One of the most popular, the Cuban roast, features strips of marinated pork, cilantro, garlic-infused mayo and rings of charred onion on a toasted baguette - yum. If you manage to snag a table you can sit down to enjoy a range of entrees, but its usually easier to grab a sandwich on the run.
