The capital of Gauteng Province of South Africa and its largest city, Johannesburg, fondly known as Jo’burg, is a metropolis with a lot of character. Easily the most prosperous name in the whole of African continent and the financial hub of the same, it also holds a soft corner in the hearts of tourists. There’s everything from interesting museums, art galleries and amusement parks to important monuments, nature reserves and shopping centres to ensure that you have a busy itinerary.

The most noteworthy feature of Johannesburg, however, is the presence of massive townships like Soweto that have a rich history of struggle associated with them. Despite coming across as a bustling concrete jungle, the city has pockets that travellers need to avoid and sectors like Sandton that they absolutely need to visit for adventures of a lifetime. The economic disparity is glaring and, to that end, there are neighbourhoods that are flush with money while certain others are in dire straits, deeply entrenched in poverty and crime. To ensure your safety and comfort, here is a list of the five best Jo’burg precincts to explore and live in.
