One of the oldest buildings in Stockholm, from the late 13th century, the Riddarholm Church is the burial church for the Swedish monarchs. Ever since his majesty Magnus Ladulås was buried here in 1290, Riddarhol Church has been the burial site for most of Sweden’s royal family. One can find the burial site of Karl Knutsson Bonde, Gustav II Adolf, Adolf Fredrik, Gustaf III, Gustav IV Adolf and Karl XIII here. Some of the tombs and chambers are open to the public, while others are closed. It was built as a Greyfriars Monastery but after the protestant reformation, it was closed and the building was transformed into a Protestant church. A particular highlight of the church, with its beautifully ornate decoration, is the Bernadotte Chapel.
Guided tours are available.
