V K Sasikala is an Indian politician and close aid of Jayalalithaa, the late chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Sasikala is the Chief Minister (elect) of Tamil Nadu. After Jayalalithaa's death in 2016, the AIADMK general council unanimously appointed Sasikala as the party's general secretary.
Sasikala was introduced to Jayalalithaa in 1982 by the former's husband M Natarajan, then a government public relations officer. Since then, she became a regular in Jayalalithaa's house and the couple finally moved into it in 1988. Sasikala and Jayalalithaa gradually became very close.
Sasikala is alleged to have misused her closeness to Jayalalitha to amass wealth for her family members. She was remanded to judicial custody for 30 days in connection with the Colour TV scam.
Sasikala, who has been convicted in the disproportionate assets case, was sent to jail on February 15, 2017, after she surrendered before a special court at the premises of Parappana Agrahara central jail on the outskirts of Bengaluru. The special court had sentenced Sasikala and co-accused to four years jail term in the disproportionate assets case in September 2014.
VK Sasikala was found guilty on the charges of corruption by the Supreme Court and was sentenced to four years in prison on 14 February 2017. This ended her high-velocity bid to be Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as she was barred from contesting an election for the next ten years.
On July 18, 2017, police officer D Roopa had alleged that Sasikala had bribed senior jail officials with 2 crores for special treatment that included a kitchen that catered meals only for her, says he has the evidence to back her claims. The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons was then transferred and assigned a far more prosaic charge of traffic and road safety in Bengaluru.
Nearly nine months after Sasikala was unanimously appointed as the interim general secretary of the AIADMK following then CM Jayalalithaa’s death, she was unseated from the post on September 12, 2017.
The resolution, which did not assign any reason for ousting Sasikala from the top post, however, did not expel her from the party. The general council also unanimously decided to abolish the post of general secretary of the party.
