The BJP on Thursday retained the Pithoragarh assembly seat in Uttarakhand, defeating its nearest rival Congress by more than 3,000 votes. Chandra Pant of the BJP polled 26,086 votes and Congress's Anju Lunthi 22,819 votes. The bypoll was necessitated after the death of BJP MLA Prakash Pant in June, following which the party fielded his wife Chandra Pant.

Chandra Pant had in 2019 defeated Congress's Anju Lunthi.

Former state finance minister Prakash Pant’s wife Chandra Pant seems set to contest the Pithoragarh bypoll to be held on November 25, on a BJP ticket.

In Pithoragarh, women voters outnumber their male counterparts in three out of four constituencies. According to the district election commission data released last year, women voters are more than men in Dharchula, Didihat and Pithoragarh constituencies.
