With barely five days to go for the new academic session to begin, colleges are ready to welcome the latest batch of undergraduate students on October 1.

Despite the surge in undergraduate applications this session, the admission process is progressing at a very slow pace. Several colleges are yet to fill up their seats even after completing the fifth, sixth and in a few cases, even the seventh round of admission.

Colleges in Kolkata are constantly updating the information on their UG admission portals, revising the schedule and amending guidelines, to ensure no candidate faces problems during applications.

Several colleges in the city have started turning to the “wish list” or “show interest” option, inviting candidates, who are genuinely interested in studying there but their names are lower on merit lists. Such candidates can register for wish lists—provided they have not already taken admission in any of the courses—following which, the institutes will draw up another merit list with them, placing them according to their academic scores.

After the state government announced that no entrance test would be held for undergraduate and postgraduate admissions this year, several universities and colleges on Thursday lined up meetings with their senior colleagues and admission committees. They plan to work out the details on finalizing the format of application forms, checking the readiness of their online portals and formulating ways on how to process the application forms and publish merit lists on time so that first-semester classes can begin by October 1.

A day before online classes start for the first semester, principals in several colleges held meetings with their teachers to review the arrangements and ensure that teachers connect with every student in some form even if they stay in the interiors with average net connectivity and smart devices.
