NEW DELHI: The star studded Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) ceremony held in the national capital on Thursday saw a number of special awards being announced.
Among them was the award for Corporate Supporter of the Year, which was given to
Reliance Foundation
for their continuing efforts to build an overall stronger sports culture in the country and support sports at the grassroot level.
Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation,
Nita Ambani accepted the award and in a heartfelt video message wished the athletes who will be part of the Indian contingent for the
Tokyo Olympics
best of luck.
Reliance Foundation's overall work and contribution towards energising Indian sports at the grassroot level was recognised at the awards ceremony.
Through the
Reliance Foundation Youth Sports
, the organisation aims at strengthening grassroots sports in India. Beginning with football in 2016, they have provided educational institutions like schools and colleges platforms to allow athletes at that level to showcase their talent. Scholarships for deserving athletes were set up and athletes were given opportunities to be scouted by teams. The Foundation also helps in providing institutes with sporting equipment.
The Reliance Foundation also celebrates August 29 as the annual Sports Day in rural areas spread over 12 states in the country. The aim is to promote community connection through participation in various games.
In 2015, the Reliance Foundation had also started the Reliance Foundation Young Champs programme to promote football talent in India. The programme is connected with the city franchises of the
Indian Super League (ISL) who through grassroot initiatives contribute to the programme.
