Uber has introduced Uber Shikara service, marking the ride-hailing giant's first water transport venture in Asia and promising to transform tourism experiences on Kashmir's iconic Dal Lake.
The service allows tourists to book traditional Kashmiri Shikaras through the Uber app. Launching with an initial fleet of seven shikaras, the service enables pre-bookings up to 15 days in advance and provides one-hour rides between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Prabhjeet Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, described the initiative as a "humble attempt to blend technology and tradition," aimed at enhancing accessibility and uplifting tourism in Kashmir's breathtaking landscape. Notably, Uber will not charge any fees, ensuring that the entire fare goes directly to local shikara drivers.

Wali Mohammad Bhatt, President of the Shikara Owners Association, welcomed the service, highlighting its potential to benefit the approximately 4,000 shikaras operating on Dal Lake. The app-based booking system is expected to standardize pricing, eliminate bargaining, and provide assured income for local operators.

How Uber users can book Shikara ride on Dal Lake, Kashmir

Travelers can easily book rides by selecting "Uber Shikara" in the app, choosing Shikara Ghat No. 16 as their pickup point, and selecting a time slot. Each ride accommodates up to four passengers, offering an accessible and convenient way to experience the scenic beauty of Dal Lake.
