Oracle revokes job offers made to students of IIT and other big engineering colleges; here's the reason given
Oracle recently announced layoff of around 20,000 employees across its global offices. Now, the US software giant has reportedly revoked dozens of job offers made to students at India’s premier engineering colleges, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and National Institute of Technology (NITs). The move comes in the wake of recent mass layoffs at the company and has sparked anxiety among students as the placement seasons nears its end. As reported by Economic Times, the placement cells has also confirmed that both full-time employee (FTE) offers for the Class of 2026 and summer internships have been rescinded at IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Madras, IIT-BHU, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Roorkee, NIT-Warangal, and MNNIT-Allahabad, among others. While the number of revoked offers ranges between two and five per campus, sources estimate that more than 50 offers have been withdrawn overall.
One of the affected student Aditya Kumar Barwal, shared on LinkedIn that his pre-placement offer was revoked due to “internal restructuring and headcount-related challenges.”
Hello everyone,
I wanted to share an important update with my network. My PPO offer from Oracle (Day 0 company) was recently revoked due to internal restructuring and headcount-related changes.
I am now actively looking for opportunities in AI/ML Engineering, Backend Engineering, and Software Development roles. I enjoy building systems from scratch, solving real-world problems, and working on AI-driven applications and automation.
A little about my journey so far:
• 2021: Cleared NDA with AIR 77
• 2022: Joined National Institute of Technology Warangal
• 2024: AI/ML Research Intern at NIT Warangal + built a startup that crossed ₹1L+ revenue in 30 days, Winner at Impact Tank
• 2025: AI Engineer Intern at Oracle + secured PPO, Runner-up at Impact Tank
• 2026: Runner-up at Velocity Hackathon
During my internship, I worked on NLP, LLM-based clustering systems, embeddings, and backend-oriented AI workflows. I’m currently looking for opportunities as an AI Engineer or Software Developer, where I can contribute across AI/ML systems and scalable backend applications using technologies such as Python, LLMs, NLP, RAG, FAISS, TensorFlow, React.js, Node.js, Express, MongoDB, and related tools.
While this setback has been difficult, I’m staying optimistic and focused on learning, building, and moving forward. I would genuinely appreciate any referrals, opportunities, or leads from my network.
Oracle had been a major recruiter at IITs, making up to 25–35 offers on some campuses for developer and server technology roles. Placement officials noted that Oracle typically secures prime hiring slots reserved for key recruiters, making the sudden withdrawals particularly disruptive.
As per the report by ET, placement committees and alumni networks are now prioritising support for affected students. At IIT-Guwahati, four of more than 10 offers were revoked. John Jose, head of the Centre for Career Development and convener of the All IITs Placement Committee (AIPC), said talks are underway with Oracle to reconsider. Under AIPC guidelines, companies that rescind offers are expected to pay three months’ salary as compensation.
Three full-time and one internship offer has been withdrawn from IIT-Kanpur. On the other hand, IIT-Delhi lost three final offers, IIT-Hyderabad five, and IIT-Roorkee four.
IIT-Kharagpur also reported two revoked offers from Oracle, alongside similar withdrawals by EMA.ai, SuperAGI, and Interview Kickstart. The placement heads have also acknowledged that the campus recruitment drive is nearly complete and finding equivalent opportunities is difficult.
Some of the institutes, including NIT-Warangal, are actively forwarding resumes and reaching out to other recruiters. While companies that fail to honour offers have sometimes been blacklisted, Oracle’s scale and longstanding presence may shield it from such sanctions.
