OpenAI has 'fired' woman researcher who opposed 'Adult Mode' in ChatGPT, here's what her termination note says
OpenAI has fired Ryan Beiermeister, one of its top policy executives, after a male colleague accused her of sexual discrimination—a charge she flatly denies. Beiermeister, who served as vice president of product policy, was let go in early January following a leave of absence, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
"The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false," Beiermeister told the Journal.
OpenAI, for its part, said Beiermeister "made valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI, and her departure was not related to any issue she raised while working at the company."
She also raised concerns that OpenAI's safeguards against child exploitation content weren't strong enough, and that the company couldn't reliably keep adult material away from teen users.
Beiermeister wasn't alone in her objections. Internal researchers who have studied how users develop emotional attachments to chatbots have also pushed back against the feature. Members of an external advisory council on "well-being and AI" that OpenAI regularly convenes have urged the company to reconsider as well.
Beiermeister joined OpenAI in mid-2024 from Meta, where she spent four years on the product team. She had also previously worked at Palantir for over seven years. At OpenAI, she started a peer-mentorship programme for women in early 2025.

Her exit comes just weeks before ChatGPT's controversial 'adult mode' is set to go live
The timing, however, has raised eyebrows. Before her firing, Beiermeister had openly told colleagues she opposed ChatGPT's planned "adult mode"—a feature that would let users generate erotic content through the chatbot. She warned it could have harmful effects on users, the Journal reported. She also raised concerns that OpenAI's safeguards against child exploitation content weren't strong enough, and that the company couldn't reliably keep adult material away from teen users.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has defended adult mode as treating 'adult users like adults'
OpenAI's CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, has said the feature is expected to launch in Q1 2026. The move is partly a competitive play—rival xAI has reportedly seen higher engagement on its Grok chatbot after loosening its own content guardrails.Beiermeister joined OpenAI in mid-2024 from Meta, where she spent four years on the product team.
