Google launches 9 AI learning features across Gemini, NotebookLM and Google Search
Google has announced a comprehensive suite of artificial intelligence-powered learning features designed to transform education in India, as outlined in their latest position paper "AI and the Future of Learning" released today.
The company is rolling out nine different AI capabilities across three platforms—Gemini, NotebookLM, and Google Search—aimed at helping students build deeper understanding through interactive, personalized learning experiences. The tools leverage advanced AI while grounding methods in established learning science principles, focusing on discovery rather than simply providing answers.
Gemini's Guided Learning feature breaks down complex problems into manageable steps through adaptive explanations and multimodal responses. Rather than delivering immediate solutions, the tool poses open-ended questions that prompt students to think critically and engage in meaningful discussion about subject matter.
Students can now instantly create flashcards, study guides, and interactive quizzes from class materials, text passages, or photographs of handwritten notes. These customisable prep tools help learners review key concepts and prepare effectively for examinations by transforming existing content into targeted practice resources.
The real-time conversation feature allows students to use voice and camera simultaneously for hands-free learning assistance. Built with capabilities from Project Astra research, students can point their phones at challenging math problems and receive immediate spoken guidance through natural back-and-forth dialogue.
NotebookLM converts complex research documents into digestible narrated summaries available in multiple Indian languages. Recent upgrades include diverse audio overview formats and enhanced video overviews powered by Gemini's image generation model, providing students with multiple ways to absorb information.
Moving beyond traditional linear note-taking, NotebookLM's mind mapping feature helps students organise thoughts visually and identify relationships between different learning materials. This spatial organisation method supports better retention and understanding of interconnected concepts.
NotebookLM automatically generates interactive learning aids based on all uploaded notes and documents within a student's notebook. These auto-generated flashcards and quizzes enable comprehensive testing across entire syllabi or research libraries without manual creation.
The platform instantly generates briefing documents and study guides from source materials while dynamically suggesting options based on themes, topics, or industries mentioned in the content. This feature helps students quickly extract essential information from lengthy resources.
Google Search's enhanced Lens feature, now available in multiple Indian languages, enables students to ask complex questions about images. This proves particularly valuable for understanding difficult diagrams, charts, or visual representations in textbooks and study materials.
Rolling out in English and Hindi, Search Live allows students to use their camera and voice directly within Search for instant multimodal assistance. Students stuck on specific problems can point their camera at the material and request quick hints or comprehensive explanations in real-time.
Google reports strong adoption rates among Indian students already using these learning tools. The company emphasizes that their AI learning philosophy prioritises igniting curiosity and engaging learners in discovery processes, ensuring technology enhances rather than replaces critical thinking skills in education.
