Elon Musk to mayor-elect of New York City Zohran Mamdani: People will die because of this appointment of yours
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has issued a warning on social media, suggesting that the move by New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani to appoint Lillian Bonsignore as the next Commissioner of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), compromise public safety and “will” lead to deaths. The controversy centres around the professional background of Bonsignore. She is a 31-year veteran whose career is built entirely within the department’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
“People will die because of this. Proven experience matters when lives are at stake,” Musk wrote in a post that quickly went viral. Not just Musk, David Sacks, Tech founder, investor and President Donald Trump's AI head, has also replied to the post on Bonsignore’s appointment.
“Pray for NYC,” Sacks said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“I know the job. I know the what the firefighters need and I can translate that to this Administration who's willing to listen. I know what EMS needs. I have been EMS for 30 plus years,” she said. Mayor-elect Mamdani has stood firmly by the appointment, framing it as a historic milestone. Bonsignore will be the department's first openly gay commissioner.
FDNY data reveals that more than 70 per cent of all emergency calls are now handled by EMS units, not fire engines. Supporters say that the Commissioner is a civilian managerial role focused on budgets, strategy and inter-agency coordination, and while tactical firefighting decisions remain with senior uniformed fire officers.

Elon Musk backs firefighting experience for the post
Musk argues that leading the FDNY requires a background in active firefighting – an experience Bonsignore does not have. Bonsignore started as an EMT in 1991 and eventually rose to become chief of EMS, notably overseeing operations during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic before retiring in 2022.“I know the job.
