AI company that wiped off trillion dollars from software stocks in less than a week launches new AI model, Claude Sonnet 4.6
AI company Anthropic whose workplace tool triggered a massive IT stock sell off earlier this month has launched Claude Sonnet 4.6 as its “most capable Sonnet model yet”. In a blog post, the Claude-maker said Sonnet 4.6 is a full upgrade of the model’s skills across coding, computer use, long-context reasoning, agent planning, knowledge work, and design. As announced by Anthropic, Claude Sonnet 4.6 will be the default model for its Free and Pro plan users in claude.ai and Claude Cowork. Pricing remains the same as Sonnet 4.5 which means Claude Sonnet 4.6 comes with a starting price of $3/$15 per million tokens.
Claude Sonnet 4.6 brings notable improvements in coding performance. According to Anthropic, tasks that previously required an Opus-class model, including complex office and real-world work, can now be handled by Sonnet 4.6.
The company also highlighted progress in computer use capabilities. Sonnet 4.6 builds on Anthropic’s general-purpose computer-using models, which interact with software by clicking and typing rather than relying on APIs. On the OSWorld benchmark, which measures how well AI models operate in real-life applications such as web browsers and code editors, Sonnet models have shown steady gains. Anthropic said early users report near human-level performance in tasks such as navigating spreadsheets, filling multi-step web forms, and working across multiple browser tabs.
Anthropic said Sonnet 4.6 performs more consistently across benchmarks and approaches Opus-level intelligence while remaining more affordable. Further, the model’s expanded context window allows it to process entire codebases, long contracts, or large collections of research papers in a single request. Anthropic said this improves long-term planning, pointing to strong results in the Vending-Bench Arena evaluation, where the model demonstrated effective decision-making over extended simulated timelines.
The AI company further revealed that it ran extensive safety tests on Sonnet 4.6 and claims it to be as safe as or safer than recent Claude models.
As previously mentioned, Claude Sonnet 4.6 is available now on all Claude plans, Claude Cowork, Claude Code, our API, and all major cloud platforms. The company has also upgraded its free tier to Sonnet 4.6 by default—it now includes file creation, connectors, skills, and compaction.
