Oppo K14x 5G review: Dependable daily driver

India's affordable smartphone market is becoming increasingly crowded as several brands compete for buyers. To stand out in the below Rs 20,000 segment requires more than a solid spec sheet. The Oppo K14x 5G is one of the newest additions to this segment.

Starting at Rs 12,999, it comes with a large battery, a tall form factor, and a Mediatek chipset. With these specs, this phone does not try to reinvent the segment but tries to be a reliable everyday phone. We tested the 4GB+128GB variant of the phone for some days. Here’s what we think about the experience:

Design and display

The Prism Violet colour of the Oppo K14x that we tested has a certain visual appeal. When light catches the rear panel at different angles, it creates a subtle play of shadow and colour, giving it a cleaner, more soothing look. At 212g and 8.6mm thick, the K14x has a solid, tall stance. It does not feel fragile, but the weight becomes apparent during extended single-handed use.

The phone’s rear panel feels slippery, and fingerprints accumulate quickly. This will make you wipe down the Oppo K14x often if you’re not using it with a case. The pill-shaped dual-camera island at the back also makes the phone wobble when it is placed flat on a table. With an IP64 water- and dust-resistant rating, the smartphone can withstand light drizzles and splashes.

The 6.78-inch LCD panel with an HD+ resolution of 1570x720 pixels looks decent. At Rs 14,999, an HD+ screen feels like cutting corners too much. During outdoor use, it claims to reach 1125 nits in high-brightness mode, yet fine text and detailed images lack the crispness you get on an AMOLED panel.

It's fine to casually stream and scroll through videos, and the 120Hz refresh rate keeps gaming and other interactions smooth, but anyone who has used a similar AMOLED screen probably may not be quite impressed with this one. The Outdoor Mode 2.0+ GloveTouch feature on the screen worked while I was listening to music and doing some chores in the kitchen, which was a good thing.

Performance and software

The MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, along with 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, makes everyday tasks simple. During the review period, switching between apps, browsing, and streaming all worked without any major problems.

That said, it stuttered at times, especially when many apps were running in the background. The phone never got hot enough to be uncomfortable, which is a beneficial thing.




Gaming on the K14x 5G is a mixed experience. Lighter titles, including casual games and mid-tier titles, ran without issues. But BGMI with raised graphics settings pushed the phone noticeably, with frame drops that interrupted gameplay. This is not a phone built for heavy gaming sessions.

ColorOS 15 is easy to navigate, and the phone received a ColorOS 16 update within weeks of our testing, a welcome sign of long-term support. The problem is the volume of bloatware that ships with the device. Third-party apps occupy storage and clutter the app drawer, and while most can be uninstalled, the initial setup requires some housekeeping before the experience feels genuinely clean.

The Oppo K14x also comes with a basic suite of AI features, as do most phones these days. These features also worked well and helped us with multiple tasks, such as AI photo editing and summarisation.

Camera

The K14x 5G features a 50MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 2MP monochrome lens at the back, along with a 5MP front camera.

For daylight photography, the rear camera is adequate for social media. Colours are fairly accurate, and details are quite good in properly lit scenes. For example, capturing a scene like a busy street or a plate of food in bright light will yield decent results with minimal editing. However, scenes like a person standing in front of a bright sky can blow out the dynamic range. Here's a camera sample:

Low-light photography is where the camera is lacking. For example, in dimly lit rooms or at night, the images will be noisy, and details will be quite lacking. Night mode does help, but it is still not as good as other phones in the same class.

The 4GB variant is capped at 1080p at 30fps, which is not ideal but it isn’t a major issue at this price. For example, in good light, video is quite acceptable, although stabilisation is slightly off when the camera is in motion.

Battery

The K14x 5G's 6,500mAh battery is its biggest highlight, and it delivers on its promise. Over a full day of browsing, video calls, social media, and occasional streaming, the phone held a charge comfortably. Users with moderate habits will likely find it lasting a second day without any anxiety.


The 45W SuperVOOC charging brings the battery from flat to around 50% in under 45 minutes, with a full charge taking roughly 1.5 hours. At this price, that combination is good enough. The phone also supports reverse charging, which came in handy for charging earbuds on the go.

Verdict

For its price, the Oppo K14x 5G is a phone that gets the job done. At Rs 14,999, it has an impressive battery life, stable performance, and an appealing design. However, the software experience is riddled with bloatware. However, the HD+ LCD screen feels like a deal breaker in a segment where AMOLED is becoming increasingly common. Yet, the camera produces decent images, and the build is solid. If you need a phone that gets you through the day without needing to be plugged in, then the Oppo K14x 5G is a great option.
