Activision has officially unveiled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, bringing back Infinity Ward's popular Modern Warfare series after a three-year gap. The game is set to launch worldwide on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The release is notable because it will be the first mainline Call of Duty title to arrive on a Nintendo platform in more than a decade. The launch also marks a major shift for the franchise, as Modern Warfare 4 will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, making it a current-generation-only title.
Nintendo Switch 2 gets first mainline Call of Duty in over a decade
Infinity Ward is leading development of the game with support from Digital Legends. Activision said the Nintendo Switch 2 version is being built natively for the console rather than relying on cloud streaming technology.
The launch is one of the first major outcomes of Microsoft's 2023 agreement with Nintendo to bring Call of Duty games to Nintendo platforms. The franchise has not appeared on a Nintendo console since 2013.
By focusing on newer hardware, Activision says developers will be able to deliver better graphics, improved performance, and more advanced gameplay features. The company also confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone will stop supporting PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
Campaign takes players across multiple countries
The single-player campaign follows Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing combat for the first time during a North Korean invasion of South Korea.
According to Infinity Ward, the story will take players to locations including New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Returning character Captain Price will also play a major role in the campaign as he pursues what the developer describes as a personal mission of revenge.
The studio said the story will feature large-scale battles, covert operations, and cinematic action sequences that have become a hallmark of the Modern Warfare series.
Multiplayer and DMZ mode return
Infinity Ward is also promising a more realistic multiplayer experience through what it calls a new "weapon-first technology stack." The system is designed to improve aiming, weapon handling, audio effects, visibility, and combat awareness.
At launch, Modern Warfare 4 will include 12 core multiplayer maps. Popular modes such as Search and Destroy and Domination will return, while new multiplayer experiences are planned.
The DMZ extraction shooter mode will also make a comeback, with more details expected before release.
Despite Microsoft owning Activision, the company has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Game Pass on launch day.
