Xiaomi founder explains why the company’s smartphones are not water resistant
Water-resistance is an almost essential feature found in majority of today’s smartphones. While Samsung’s Galaxy S7 can work under water for some time, Motorola and HTC’s devices can withstand minor water spills. However, Xiaomi is one popular smartphone maker that is yet to make a waterproof smartphone. And now, the company’s founder Lin Jun has explained why.
According to Jun, Xiaomi has never made any water resistant smartphones, despite requests for the same from users. One of the reasons is that Xiaomi handsets, when damaged even slightly, have the water protection weakened. Another reason given by Jun is that waterproofing adds to the devices’ overall costs. He will add the functionality if the users are willing to pay 20% to 30% more cost for the feature, says a Chinese website Money163.
Xiaomi has gotten quite popular in the Indian smartphone market, thanks to a slew of affordable yet well-specced smartphones.
Recently, Sony also removed water-resistance functionality from its Xperia X range of smartphones.
The Chinese smartphone maker earlier this month launched its latest budget smartphone - Redmi 3s, in China. The company has launched two variants of the smartphone, with the 2GB RAM/16GB storage variant priced at $106, and the 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage version bearing a price tag of $136. Both variants will be available for purchase on Xiaomi's official website - mi.com, starting June 16.
Recently, the Chinese tech giant revealed that it will be launching a dedicated Mi Community in India on June 20. The company has already started accepting registrations for the community beta testers, and the forum will go live on June 14.
