Apparently, now you can’t even trust Google

Though Google is primarily known for its namesake search engine, the tech giant has a vast array of digital services (e.g. Gmail, Google Drive) that are used by innumerable users around the world. If something is backed by the name of Google, it’s almost a given that thing is completely trustworthy. Right?

Apparently not, as it seems that now you can’t even trust Google. That’s because Google’s Safe Browsing tool flagged its own homepage as “partially dangerous,” implying that some web content hosted through Google’s own services could be malicious.


Google’s Safe Browsing tool scans billions of URLs per day, hunting for (potentially) unsafe websites. The technology discovers thousands of malicious sites everyday, and quite a few of them are safe websites that have been compromised. Not just that, you can manually specify any URL and check its safety status on the safe browsing tool.

When Google’s own URL (www.google.com) was entered on the safe browsing tool’s website, it indicated the current status as partially dangerous. The tool also mentioned that some pages on the website could install malware on visitors’ computers, among other details.


However, the “problem” has since been rectified, and the safe browsing tool now reports Google’s own URL as perfectly alright, (or “Not Dangerous”). It’s pretty much certain that this was just a temporary glitch (Otherwise why else would Google flag its own URL as malicious?). However, it just goes on to show that nothing is truly safe on the internet, and you’re only as secure as your browsing habits.
