Space Jam 2 finally has a release date: Jul. 16, 2021. That’s 25 years since Michael Jordan was drafted by Bugs Bunny to help Looney Tunes characters (read Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, the Tasmanian Devil and others) win a basketball match against a group of evil aliens. The cast at the time also included NBA stars Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Patrick Ewing, while the story took place during the time between Jordan’s initial retirement from the NBA in 1993 and his comeback in 1995.
For the sequel, Warner Bros. has decided on no one else but the best. Enter LeBron James. No retirement needed, no comeback needed. Currently the best player on courts these days, he’s regarded by some as the greatest player of all time. We’re talking four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, three NBA Finals MVP Awards, and two Olympic gold medals for the LA Lakers forward. On the all-time highest scorers list he sits fifth, just one spot below Jordan.
This isn't LeBron's first acting gig though — he had a supporting role in Trainwreck, starring actress Amy Schumer. Bugs Bunny and his love interest Lola will reprise their roles, and the former will be voiced by Eric Bouza. (Eric is currently the only voice actor confirmed for the movie.)
Rumors of a Space Jam follow-up first emerged in 2015 when LeBron and Springhill Entertainment (the production company he co-founded) signed a deal with Warner Bros. Justin Lin was in talks to direct in 2016, but that deal did not go through. Space Jam 2 will be produced by Ryan Coogler, known for his work on Marvel Studios' Black Panther, and will be directed by Terence Nance, the creator of HBO's Random Acts of Flyness. Play!
