Johnson & Johnson launches TECNIS Odyssey™ intraocular lens in India
Cataract surgery has evolved significantly in recent years, with advances in lens technology helping improve visual outcomes and overall quality of life for patients. Intraocular lenses (IOLs), which replace the eye’s natural lens during surgery, are now designed to support clearer vision across different distances while also addressing age-related conditions such as presbyopia.
As expectations around post-surgical vision continue to rise, there is growing focus on lens technologies that can reduce dependence on glasses while maintaining visual clarity in different lighting conditions. Newer generations of intraocular lenses are being developed with advanced optics and materials to support a wider range of vision and more consistent visual performance after cataract procedures.
Johnson & Johnson recently announced that it is expanding its portfolio of presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (PC-IOL) with the roll-out of TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL in India. The new full visual range IOL offers high-quality and continuous vision with unmatched range. This will allow patients to see clearly from far to near and in between, minimising their need for glasses. Built on the industry-leading TECNIS platform, combining advanced optics and proprietary materials, TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL offers consistently clear, high-contrast vision.
“The TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL addresses a significant unmet need for cataract patients seeking greater spectacle independence. Its introduction in India expands access to advanced IOL technology designed to deliver high-quality, continuous vision across distances. Together with TECNIS PureSee, TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL elevates the strength and depth of our IOL portfolio, helping us meet the diverse needs of today’s aging population,” said Burzin Shahana, Country Manager, Surgical Vision India and South Asia, Johnson & Johnson.
Currently, an estimated 94 million people aged 50 years and over have moderate-to-severe distance vision impairment or blindness that could be corrected through lens replacement surgery1. These figures are projected to increase, since presbyopia and cataract development are part of the aging process. Presbyopia is a progressive eye condition that makes it difficult to focus on close objects and usually becomes noticeable around 40 years of age2. Full visual range IOLs provide the opportunity to correct presbyopia during lens replacement cataract surgery.
TECNIS Odyssey™ provides:
Enhanced tolerance to refractive error - TECNIS Odyssey™ is engineered for surgeon confidence as Freeform diffractive profile contributes to enhanced tolerance to residual refractive errors.
>>94% of patients were satisfied with their overall vision without glasses*.
Optimised dysphotopsia profile - Freeform diffractive profile contributes to a low incidence of bothersome visual disturbances.
>>93% of patients either did not report any visual disturbances*.
High image contrast - TECNIS Odyssey™ delivers superior low light contrast
>>92% satisfaction with ability to see steps and curbs at night*.
With a range of options designed to address different visual needs and lifestyles, the TECNIS platform offers multiple intraocular lens solutions for patients undergoing cataract surgery. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the TECNIS innovation at Johnson & Johnson. Over the past two decades, the platform has focused on advancing intraocular lens design with optics intended to replicate aspects of the natural eye. Developed through ongoing clinical research and product development, the TECNIS range reflects the company’s continued work in intraocular lens technology and cataract care.
The TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL, the full range of vision IOL, is now available in India.
