In the world of professional wrestling, few stories are as layered as the one between Rey Mysterio and his son, Dominik. The legendary luchador recently expressed his desire for a final tag team run alongside his estranged son, Dominik Mysterio, reigniting speculation about a potential reunion of one of
WWE's most storied duos.
Speaking on
Cheap Heat with Peter Rosenberg, Rey revealed that despite their well-documented differences, he dreams of rekindling their partnership in the squared circle.
“That’s something that as a father, they always would love to have with their kids. To be able to reconnect. And end of how you started on the good side. So, I don’t know if that’s going to happen. But over the years, people change. Sometimes for good, sometimes for bad. Hopefully, one day Dom can see the bright side of being on the Mysterios’ side. And just being family overall. But I think that’s going to be very hard. I’m dreaming. I am just dreaming.”
Rey and Dominik etched their names in WWE history on May 16, 2021, at WrestleMania Backlash. They became the first-ever father-and-son duo to capture tag team gold, defeating Dolph Ziggler and
Robert Roode to claim the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Their reign lasted 63 days before falling to The Usos at Money in the Bank 2021.
The duo’s achievements seemed destined to cement their bond both inside and outside the ring, but the tides turned in shocking fashion.
Fast forward to September 2022 at WWE Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales, Dominik delivered one of the most talked-about betrayals in recent history. Aligning himself with the sinister Judgment Day faction, the 27-year-old turned on his father, setting the stage for a deeply personal and emotional feud. This animosity came to a head at WrestleMania 39, where the father and son clashed in a heated 15-minute encounter on Night One at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Rey’s veteran savvy ultimately secured him the victory in what has been hailed as one of the event’s standout matches.
Despite their storied rivalry, Rey Mysterio has shown no bitterness toward his son. Instead, the Hall of Famer has expressed hope for a reconciliation, not just as family but as partners inside the WWE ring. The possibility of such a reunion remains a tantalizing prospect for fans, given their undeniable chemistry and shared history.
At 49 years old, Rey Mysterio continues to be one of the most respected and admired figures in the industry. With a career spanning over three decades and numerous accolades to his name, including a recent Hall of Fame induction, Rey’s legacy is unparalleled. His influence remains evident, with WWE Superstars often acknowledging his impact, including during high-stakes Premium Live Events.
