Former WWE Superstar Stevie Richards recently opened up about his strained relationship with WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman. Despite once being under Heyman's tutelage in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), the two have had a tumultuous history.
Richards, who made a name for himself in ECW under Heyman's guidance, departed the promotion in 1997 to sign with WCW. This decision, however, soured his relationship with Heyman. On a recent episode of his podcast,
The Stevie Richards Show, Richards explained that many within ECW were upset with his departure, and Heyman was particularly displeased.
He said, "I got buried in the new ECW, probably rightfully so, because Paul (Heyman) never forgot what I did to him in ECW. That was the receipt on me, so yeah, everybody was mad. I left (Blue) Minnie and (Hollywood) Nova high and dry with the most successful gimmick that any of the three of us have ever had up to that point. I disappointed and let down and screwed over a lot of people."
Richards believes that his subsequent underwhelming stint in WWE's version of ECW was a deliberate attempt by Heyman to punish him for leaving the original promotion.
Despite this, Richards acknowledges Heyman's significant impact on his career, crediting him for helping him become a recognizable name in the wrestling industry.
"I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Paul (Heyman.) Paul produced me ... He had patience, he disarmed me, he made me feel comfortable in my own skin when doing promos. He featured me, he made a guy with daisy dukes and a half shirt a viable world title contender in probably the roughest wrestling promotion that would never like a guy with that presentation," Richards said.
