CHANDIGARH: On Sunday, during the heats of the 100m backstroke at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Olympic record was smashed three times by different swimmers of different nationalities.
Gold medal hopeful Kaylee Mckeown, who holds the world record with a timing of 57.45 seconds shook off her nerves by setting a new Olympic record in women’s 100m backstroke at her debut games in Tokyo.
The 20-year-old Australian swam 57.88 to win her heat and progress to the semifinals. Her fellow teammate Emily Seebohm held the Olympic record with a timing of 58.23 during the 2012 London Olympics.
On Sunday, in heat four,
Kylie Masse
of Canada broke Seebohm’s record with a timing of 58.17. But her record only stood for under a minute when Regan Smith of the United States of America smashed Masse’s record with the impeccable timing of 57.99. However, in heat six, which included the world record holder Kaylee Mckeown and Emily Seebohm, there was one final twist.
Kaylee smashed the record set by Smith with a timing of 57.88, falling just short of her own world record. "I would lie if I said I wasn’t nervous," McKeown told a news channel after her win.
The semifinals will be held on Monday while the final will be on Tuesday morning.
