MUMBAI, December 24: After a great 2007 in which she reached several highs like beating former World No 1 Martina Hingis, making it to the pre-quarters of a Grand Slam and above all getting to a career best ranking of 27, Sania Mirza is all pumped up for the upcoming season. On her targets this season, she jokingly said, "Well, I'd like to beat Justine Henin (woman's world No 1)."
Going into a new season can always be challenging.
When asked about her focus in the New Year, Sania said, "I don't believe in New Year resolutions. Even rankings don't bother me", she added after being named a global ambassador for Adidas. The Indian icon, however, spoke time and again about how she wants to remain "injury-free".
"God willing, there'll be no freak mishap," she said. On a bright sunny day, off the Gateway coast, the gorgeous Sania, along with Hartwin Feddersen, director of marketing (Adidas), made her way to the yacht on a speedboat.
The venue, a picturesque and a rather unique one. On the water, literally. "It's an honour to have such a talented player with us," remarked Feddersen. Sania returned the compliment by saying the brand has always been creating "stylish and comfortable shoes".
After obliging almost every photographer on board with her charming smile, she sat down to answer a plethora of questions. When asked about her new trainer, she said she "needed a physio" and is indeed happy to have found a good one.
The groundwork, the Hyderabadi added, is the same and the focus is always on "working on one's weaknesses".
The 20-year-old is in fact very excited about representing India at the Beijing Olympics. She considers it to be a "great honour and a challenge at the same time." However, she chose not to speak about her chances at the event as it's "a long way off."
On the season's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open which kicks off next month, she said, "It's a time when players come back after a fairly long break. Hence, it is full of surprises. You never know, a few seeded players could crash out early in the tourney"
Well, her focus is on remaining injury-free and who knows, if you make up your mind and believe in yourself, then impossible is nothing.
