Success came early for Vikas Krishan, one of Indian boxing's brightest star. He won gold and bronze at the 2010 Youth World Amateur Boxing Championship and Youth Olympics respectively and later that year, participating in the lightweight category at the Asian Games, he won a gold medal.
At the age of 20, Vikas made it to his first Olympics - the 2012 London Games. In it, he reached the quarter-finals of the welterweight category and won his bout with Errol Spence 13-11. However, after reviewing video footage, the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) ruled in the favour of the American and awarded four additional points to Spence for fouls committed by Vikas. Jolted, young Vikas shunned the boxing ring for almost 18 months and joined Haryana Police.
When he resumed, Vikas found success sporadically. He won a bronze medal at the 2014 Asian Games held at Incheon, South Korea and then during the 2015 Asian Boxing Championships he bagged silver after going down to Zhanibek Alimkhanuly of Kazakhstan.
By reaching in the semi-finals of the last Olympics qualifier held in Baku in June, Vikas Krishan booked his ticket to the 2016 Summer Games. He defeated South Korea's Dongyun Lee in the quarter-finals but could not take the semi-final bout as he was declared medically unfit after a cut he sustained. Hence, he settled for bronze.
One of only three Indian pugilists at the Rio Games - along with Manoj Kumar (64 kg) and
Shiva Thapa
(56 kg) - Vikas will compete in the same category in which Vijender Singh won an Olympic bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
