Toronto Maple Leafs consider William Nylander trade amid struggles and rising NHL trade rumors this season
The Toronto Maple Leafs have not been going as planned in the 2025-26 campaign. The internal inconsistencies have made a team with big expectations at the beginning of the season struggle with inconsistency, which is increasing frustration among the fans and analysts throughout the NHL. The questions concerning the long-term direction of the team began to gain momentum as the team continued to lose throughout the season.
The same concerns got worse once NHL insiders reported that the franchise at least contemplated trade talks with William Nylander. Although the idea of relocating such an important offensive player in the past would have been considered far-fetched, the challenging season has made the organization consider all its options to remodel its team.
Nylander, picked in the 8th position during the 2014 NHL Draft, has continued to be one of the most productive players of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although he had to miss some time earlier in the season because of injury, the Swedish winger has remained offensive and is usually the top goal-scorer in the team.
General manager Brad Treliving is under more and more pressure to decide whether the existing roster is still focused on the Stanley Cup or has to make significant adjustments.
The long-term contract is also critical in the discussion by Nylander. The forward signed an eight-year extension at a total of 92M with the annual cap of 11.5M. Due to the deal containing a full no-movement clause, any trade situation would involve the approval of the player.
In the meantime, Toronto has still been relying on its main players, among them captain Auston Matthews. Nonetheless, the coming of the trade speculation implies that the Maple Leafs might have to make some key choices as they look to the next stage of their NHL future.
