Oskar Sundqvist injury update: Blues’ forward suffers skate cut in collision with Connor McDavid against Edmonton Oilers
A scary moment unfolded in the third period Sunday night at Rogers Place when Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist went down after colliding with Oilers captain Connor McDavid. What appeared to be a routine contact along the boards turned serious when Sundqvist remained on the ice clutching his left leg.
Sundqvist suffered a skate cut just above his ankle from McDavid's blade during the collision. Blues teammates and officials immediately signaled for medical staff as the severity of the injury became apparent. Sundqvist needed assistance getting off the ice and headed straight to the locker room.
Blues head coach Jim Montgomery provided an update after the game that offered significant relief despite the injury. "Luckily, it did not touch his Achilles," Montgomery told reporters following the 5-0 loss to Edmonton.
The collision happened midway through the third period as both players tangled up near the boards. McDavid got back to his feet quickly, but Sundqvist stayed down and grabbed at his ankle area. The Oilers crowd gave Sundqvist a respectful ovation as trainers helped him off the ice.
While Sundqvist avoided damage to his Achilles tendon, Montgomery indicated the injury remains serious, and the recovery timeline stays uncertain. "The cut was deep," Montgomery confirmed. "I don't know how long it takes until he's back and has the flexibility in his ankle."
Montgomery listed Sundqvist as day-to-day, though the depth of the cut suggests he could miss extended time depending on how quickly the wound heals and whether he regains full mobility in his ankle. Sundqvist plays an important role as a bottom-six center for St. Louis.
The 31-year-old has appeared in 39 games this season, recording three goals and 10 assists while providing veteran leadership and defensive responsibility. The Blues will need to adjust their forward depth while Sundqvist recovers. St. Louis dropped to 19-22-4 with the loss and sits seventh in the Central Division.
The injury capped a difficult night for the Blues, who were shut out 5-0 by Edmonton. Connor Ingram stopped all 27 shots for his first shutout as an Oiler. For Edmonton, however, the night marked a night of celebration as the franchise scored its second consecutive shutout loss in as many days.
Zach Hyman remained the star of the show with three points, while McDavid got two assists to retain his spot as the points leader for the league. The Oilers will next face the Devils on Tuesday night as they hope to get their first three-win streak of the season.
