NHL updates: Jack Eichel reveals re-signing with Vegas Golden Knights was “no-brainer” after acquisition of Mitch Marner

Jack Eichel entered the 2025-26 season as one of the biggest names potentially heading to unrestricted free agency. He didn't stay on the market long. The Vegas Golden Knights soon re-signed their star center on an eight-year, $108 million contract extension.

The contract also includes a full no-movement clause to make sure their best player remains in Vegas. Meanwhile, for Eichel, this wasn’t a tough decision to make. He had already lifted the Stanley Cup with Vegas, and their acquisition of Mitch Marner back in the summer proves that the franchise is just as serious as him when it comes to their championship dreams.

Vegas pulled off arguably its greatest coup when it executed a sign-and-trade for Marner, removing the league's top free agent from the market before he could field any other offers. Eichel was effusive with his praise for the move and what it meant for his future.

"He's a world-class hockey player. He's one of the smartest players in our league,” Eichel explained. The Marner deal wasn't just about adding talent. However, for Eichel, getting Marner wasn’t just about acquiring another big name. It was also proof of the Golden Knights’ commitment to win another Stanley Cup

That was something that connected with Eichel, as he stated, "Beyond the term, dollars, or specific clauses in my contract, it's the franchise's bold moves like landing Marner that made signing an easy decision.” For a player of his caliber, it is reassuring when the team he plays with is just as serious as him about winning the title.

They've added players like Tomas Hertl and Noah Hanifin, and now Marner. That willingness to do whatever it takes to compete for championships is exactly what Eichel wants. He continued, "It's an organization that wants to win the Stanley Cup every year. As a player, that's all you can ask for. “

Eichel also knows that Vegas is giving their all to win the title once again. He continued, “ We know they're going to do what's necessary to give us a chance to win, and it's what I want to do. Continue to push to win another Stanley Cup here in Vegas. It was a huge part of my decision."

Eichel, meanwhile, continues to spearhead Vegas’ offense. Since his debut as a Golden Knight on February 16, 2022, he's been among the NHL's leading scorers with 100 goals and 253 points. He helped Vegas win a Stanley Cup and posted a playoff-best 26 points during that championship run.

Last season, Eichel posted a career-best 94 points and finished eighth in NHL scoring while earning top-five finishes for the Hart, Selke, and Lady Byng trophies. When asked about signing the extension, Eichel made his feelings clear.

"I said all along I wanted to be here, playing for the Vegas Golden Knights. Really happy to get it done. So happy to continue my career here in Vegas," Eichel said. The Golden Knights get to keep one of the NHL's elite centers locked up through his mid-30s, and Eichel gets to play for an organization that will do whatever it takes to win.

With a 16-8-10 record so far, the Golden Knights have firmly maintained their spot at the top half of the Pacific Division. While the Oilers matched them in points with their recent victory, with three games in hand, Vegas firmly has the upper hand when it comes to securing a playoff spot.

While his recent injury put a lot of fans in doubt, Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy has reassured hockey faithful that the star center is only out on a day-to-day basis and will be back in the lineup soon. The Golden Knights however continue to remain on the top of their game as with their recent 7-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks prove that even without their ace, they are still a force to be reckoned with.
