Islanders reassign defenseman Travis Mitchell to AHL Bridgeport as roster strategy change
The New York Islanders reassigned defenseman Travis Mitchell to the AHL affiliate, Bridgeport Islanders, on Wednesday. This was announced by the team after it went through a roster adjustment, and it came as the NHL club prepares for a stretch of games this week. As per reports, Mitchell made his NHL debut on Black Friday, playing in nine of the last 10 games.
Mitchell has made quite an impression this season with the Islanders, stepping in for several games after being called up from Bridgeport recently. This marks a major milestone in the career of the undrafted defenseman. He originally joined the New York team as a free agent after his time at Cornell University in 2023. While he mostly played with the club’s minor league affiliate, he’s caught the eye of many with his tough playing style and dependable defense whenever he’s been given the chance.
In a major roster adjustment, the New York Islanders reassigned defenseman Travis Mitchell to the AHL's Bridgeport Islanders on Wednesday. The move is a part of the team's ongoing effort to manage its lineup effectively. The reassignment is a part of their strategic roster management decision by the Islanders.
With the Islanders enjoying a brief pause in their NHL schedule, the team decided to send the defenseman back to the AHL instead of leaving him inactive at the NHL level. In Bridgeport, Mitchell will get plenty of playing time, which is seen as vital for his development and preparedness in case he needs to be called up again later in the season.
Mitchell joined the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders amid a series of injuries. As per reports, key defenseman Alexander Romanov has been sidelined for an extended period with a shoulder injury, while other regulars have found themselves in and out of the lineup due to fitness and rest considerations.
As the Islanders won’t be seen in action until Friday night when they host the Vancouver Canucks, Bridgeport will be in action on Wednesday night against the Syracuse Crunch, where Mitchell could be expected as one of the potential players who would give the Crunch a tough fight.
Reports suggest that Mitchell recorded one goal, four shots on 13 shot attempts, adding six blocks and 13 hits in 103:50 total minutes. The Islanders are off on Wednesday after their 3-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, where Mitchell played a career-high 15:04 minutes, but he was not seen in the final 6:37.
