Expectations were modest when the Montreal Canadiens signed Alexandre Texier as a free agent in November. His recent exit from the St. Louis Blues came quietly, with limited production and little fanfare, leaving few convinced he would make a real impact in Montreal’s lineup.
Texier’s first NHL hat trick against the Florida Panthers did more than add goals on the board. It changed how people see his role, his confidence, and where he fits with the Canadiens going forward.

Texier’s three-goal night in a 6-2 victory over the Panthers was the clearest sign yet that his confidence is trending upward. What made it more significant was the timing. Just one game earlier, he recorded a goal and two assists against the Calgary Flames, marking the first three-point outing of his
NHL career.
The consistency matters. Texier isn’t relying on isolated moments or power-play luck. His recent production is rooted in opportunity and fit. Playing on Montreal’s top line with Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield has allowed him to lean into his natural offensive instincts without overcomplicating his game. He’s getting to open ice, making quick reads, and finishing plays when they develop.
Head coach Martin St. Louis has been comfortable keeping Texier in that role, in part because the coach knows his background well.
St. Louis followed Texier’s development closely during his time with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, where the French forward stood out in the AHL. The belief was always there; the clean slate in Montreal has helped unlock it.
“He has all the tools to do what his brain is telling him to do,” Louis on Texier.
Through 22 games with the Canadiens this season, Texier has posted seven goals and seven assists, solid middle-six numbers that look even better considering his recent surge. Suzuki has credited Texier’s resilience and adaptability, noting how quickly he has settled into the group.
Texier’s resurgence has also earned him international recognition. He was named to France’s men’s hockey team for the upcoming Milano Cortina Olympics and will be the only NHL player on the roster, a role that comes with heavy minutes and leadership expectations.
For now, Texier remains focused on Montreal’s remaining schedule before the Olympic break. With 13 games left and a growing role alongside the Canadiens’ top scorers, he’s turning a low-expectation signing into a genuine success story that’s beginning to resonate well beyond the Bell Centre.
