Super Bowl Commercials: How much is the average cost of a 30-second commercial during the annual league championship?
Super Bowl commercials, also known as Super Bowl ads, are high-profile television commercials featured in the U.S. television broadcast of the NFL's championship game. They have become a cultural phenomenon, with many viewers watching the commercials alongside the game itself. Super Bowl ads are known for their cinematographic quality, unpredictability, surreal humor, and use of special effects. Celebrity cameos are also common. Some of the adverts that aired, or were going to air during the game are controversial.
Super Bowl LIX, which falls on February 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans will be the opportunity for brands that no other sporting event can compete with. For Fox, it is the exclusive broadcaster, having sold all the available spots as of November 5, 2024.
A 30-second ad that aired on Super Bowl had seen a surge in price: From $37,500 in the year 2000, an average was pegged at about $2.2 million, to double the same in 2015, it was around $4.5 million, and had reached $7 million by 2022; this would only mean more relevance of advertisements aired during the show.
In 2024, the cost of a 30-second commercial during Super Bowl LVIII was between $6.5 million and $7 million, showing the massive investment in advertising during the event. The event attracted 123.7 million viewers through television and streaming, making it the most-watched program in U.S. television history.
Fox has quoted a 30-second commercial spot price for Super Bowl LIX at over $7 million, which is in line with the previous years' rates of around $7 million. This is because the Super Bowl attracts a huge viewership, making advertising in such an event highly sought after.
Super Bowl advertisements are iconic because they are of such quality, so funny, and even full of special effects. These days, more and more advertisements have cinematographic qualities and emotive messages that touch the viewers' hearts. Celebrity cameos are also common now, from the unknown personalities to the unexpected combination.
For example, a 2007 CBS Late Show promo featured David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey, who had conflicts following a joke directed at her during the 67th Academy Awards. A 2010 sequel also featured Jay Leno, who was slated to return to The Tonight Show after a conflict between NBC and Conan O'Brien.
