Troy Aikman signs off as ESPN’s Monday Night Football season officially ends

One of those reminders arrived quietly on Jan 19, 2026. Troy Aikman’s year in the Monday Night Football booth came to an end. No farewell segment on air. Just a short moment shared online that confirmed ESPN’s NFL broadcast season is done. Aikman marked it himself.

On Monday, Aikman posted an Instagram story after ESPN aired its final Monday Night Football game of the season. He reposted a photo with longtime broadcast partner Joe Buck and wrote, “That’s a wrap in the booth!” The post went live hours after the divisional round wrapped up.

That moment mattered because there are no Monday games left. The NFL does not schedule Monday Night Football during the divisional or conference rounds. The league avoids giving one team extra rest while another plays on a short week. The playoff format stays tight. Saturday and Sunday only. Always.

With that structure, ESPN’s NFL season officially closed last week.

Aikman and Buck will not call another game together until the 2026 regular season begins in September. That absence feels noticeable. Over the last few years, Monday nights carried a different tone. Aikman stayed direct. He questioned calls. He challenged officials. He never softened opinions.

During a Sports Business Radio podcast appearance on Dec. 12, 2025, Aikman explained his approach. “I never try to make anything personal,” he said during the interview. “I try to be honest. I try to be fair. That fan at home cares deeply about their team.” That honesty became his signature.

But the future holds more questions than answers. On the same podcast, Aikman admitted broadcasting may not be his final chapter. He said he is interested in working for an NFL team, even though the learning curve feels steep at his age.

That idea moved closer to reality earlier this month. In Jan. 2026, the Miami Dolphins brought Aikman in as a temporary consultant during their general manager search. The role ended once Jon-Eric Sullivan took the job. Still, the experience mattered.

For now, Aikman remains ESPN’s voice on Mondays. But as the playoffs roll on without him in the booth, one thing feels clear. This season did not end for ESPN alone. It reopened a door Aikman has not closed.
