Patrick Mahomes injury update: Top surgeon explains why Chiefs quarterback’s quick ACL surgery isn’t as risky as it sounds
The moment Patrick Mahomes went down, the mood around the NFL shifted. Chiefs fans feared the worst, and those fears were confirmed soon after when it was revealed that the Kansas City quarterback had torn his ACL. What surprised many, though, was not just the injury itself, but how quickly everything moved next. By Monday, Mahomes was already in surgery. For a player of Mahomes’ stature, the speed of the decision sparked plenty of chatter. Social media filled up with questions. Was it rushed. Was it risky. Was it too soon after such a serious injury. When reports also mentioned that his LCL required repair, the concern only grew louder. To many fans, it felt unusual and even alarming. But according to medical experts, this kind of timeline is not as extreme as it sounds, especially when elite athletes are involved.
In most ACL cases, doctors usually wait a week or even two before operating. That pause allows swelling to go down and inflammation to settle, making surgery easier in standard situations. But Mahomes’ case is different because of his profession, resources, and the demands placed on his body. For athletes like him, acting quickly can actually help manage inflammation rather than worsen it. It also allows the recovery process to begin sooner, even though the overall rehab timeline remains long and demanding.
Mahomes’ surgery confirmed the seriousness of the injury, including the need to repair his LCL. That makes his road back even more challenging, but the early operation gives doctors a clean starting point for rehab. Now, the focus turns away from the timing of the surgery and toward what comes next. Mahomes’ season is over, but his recovery has already begun. For the Chiefs, there is no replacing him on the field.

Why Patrick Mahomes’ ACL surgery happened so quickly
To clear up the confusion, People spoke to Dr. Yair Kissin, vice chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. Kissin was not involved in Mahomes’ procedure, but he explained why early surgery is often the preferred route for top-level athletes. As Kissin pointed out, professional players do not operate on the same timeline as the average patient. “(Athletes) are on a different time schedule than every other human," Kissin showed People. "They have a multimillion dollar contract, they have to get well as soon as possible. So it's definitely not considered malpractice or wrong to do early surgery. Doing it as quickly as he had it done is actually pretty widely accepted because you don't really allow that initial inflammatory response to happen."In most ACL cases, doctors usually wait a week or even two before operating.
