Patrick Mahomes may still be months away from fully returning to the field, but NFL fans are already treating the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback like a guaranteed Week 1 lock. The speculation intensified after the NFL handed Kansas City two massive primetime games to open the 2026 season, triggering fresh conspiracy theories across social media.
Many fans became convinced the league secretly knew Mahomes was ahead of schedule in his ACL recovery. The NFL, however, insists that is far from the truth. League executives are now trying to cool down the growing rumors before they spiral even further.
Patrick Mahomes recovery sparks NFL conspiracy theories after Chiefs schedule reveal
The conversation exploded after Kansas City landed major national television slots during the opening weeks of the season. Some fans immediately interpreted the scheduling decision as proof that Mahomes would be medically cleared in time to return from the devastating ACL injury he suffered in December 2025.
NFL executive Hans Schroeder quickly dismissed those theories.
“We didn't know anything more than anyone else,” Schroeder said while addressing the speculation surrounding Mahomes’ status.
The Chiefs superstar tore the ACL in his left knee during a game against the Los Angeles Chargers while attempting to finish a touchdown play. Since then, Mahomes has spent months rehabbing after surgery, with fans closely tracking every update tied to his recovery.
The scheduling drama only intensified because Kansas City remains one of the league’s biggest television draws. Even with uncertainty around Mahomes, the NFL clearly believes the Chiefs still command massive attention.
Andy Reid gives encouraging Patrick Mahomes injury update
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid recently shared a more grounded perspective on Mahomes’ recovery while speaking on NFL Network’s The Insiders. Reid praised the quarterback’s work ethic but pushed back on claims that anyone truly knows whether Mahomes is “ahead of schedule.”
“People go, ‘Well, he's ahead of schedule.' I'm going, 'who made the schedule? Everybody's different, let's just take it day by day,' ” Reid said.
The veteran coach also revealed just how committed Mahomes has been throughout the rehabilitation process.
“He spends seven hours here going through it,” Reid explained. “He hasn't missed a day and he wants more, all the things that are Patrick Mahomes.”
Chiefs vice president Rick Burkholder previously estimated the recovery process could take around nine months, which keeps the possibility of a Week 1 return alive. Mahomes himself admitted that is still the goal.
“... I want to be ready for Week 1,” Mahomes said earlier this year. “The doctors said I could be, but I can't predict what happens throughout the process.”
For now, the NFL world remains stuck between optimism, speculation, and nonstop Mahomes recovery theories.
