Speaking on ESPN’s “Get Up,” former NFL star Damien Woody made it clear he believes Kansas City cannot place the same workload on Mahomes immediately after his recovery.

"There's not a better time for that to happen than now, because your quarterback is coming off an ACL," Damien Woody, a two-time Super Bowl winner and ESPN analyst, said on Thursday on ESPN's "Get Up."


Woody argued that Reid must lean more heavily on the running game instead of asking Mahomes to carry the offense from Week 1. That opinion has gained traction because the Chiefs already appear to be preparing for a philosophical shift.

Kansas City strengthened its backfield this offseason by signing Kenneth Walker III, who enters 2026 with enormous momentum after earning Super Bowl MVP honours earlier this year. The move immediately fueled speculation that the Chiefs may finally commit to a more balanced offensive attack.

The concern surrounding Mahomes is understandable. Kansas City struggled badly after the injury, collapsing to a 6-11 finish and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Suddenly, the aura of invincibility around the franchise disappeared.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Chiefs internally believe the star quarterback is progressing faster than expected ahead of their Monday Night Football opener against the Denver Broncos.

"The league doesn't do that unless they think there's a realistic chance that Patrick Mahomes is going to be back," ESPN's Adam Schefter said on "Get Up."

"The feeling right now within the organization is that he is tracking to be ready for that Monday night game against Bo Nix, who is coming off his own surgeries on his ankle, and the Denver Broncos in Kansas City."

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach has reportedly described Mahomes as “way ahead of schedule,” while Reid recently hinted the quarterback could participate in offseason activities.

Still, the bigger question remains unanswered. Even if Mahomes returns by Week 1, can Kansas City realistically expect him to survive another season playing the same aggressive style immediately after major knee surgery? That debate may shape the entire NFL season.
