The issue with Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel has gone from viral images to a bigger discussion about how newsrooms make decisions and who is responsible for them. What started as a photo story about a resort in Arizona has now caused problems inside The Athletic and its parent company, The New York Times. Some staff members are worried about how quickly leadership acted, and some are even questioning whether the public statement was made before everyone in the company fully understood the situation.
Why did The Athletic’s response to Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel draw criticism?
The first argument was about pictures of Russini and Vrabel together at a resort, which led to rumors that both quickly denied. Vrabel dismissed the narrative outright, while Russini clarified they were part of a larger group.
Soon after, executive editor Steven Ginsberg issued a firm defense, stating: “These were public interactions in front of many people. Dianna is a premier journalist covering the NFL, and we’re proud to have her at The Athletic.”
He also said the photos were “misleading” and missing “essential context.”
That response, however, did not land smoothly within the newsroom. According to internal reactions reported externally, several staff members felt the statement came too quickly, without acknowledging whether any internal review was underway. Some described the handling as rushed, which only intensified scrutiny rather than calming it.
The issue grew more complex when reports suggested that an internal investigation had already begun and that Russini had been placed on leave. Neither The Athletic nor The New York Times publicly confirmed those details at the time, adding to confusion around transparency.
As the discussion widened, attention turned toward journalistic standards. The New York Times referenced its own policy on avoiding conflicts of interest or even the appearance of one. That language became central to how the situation was interpreted, both inside and outside the organisation.
Albert Breer offered a more nuanced perspective while speaking on Boston radio, pointing to a broader issue within sports media. He said:
“The lines get blurred in these sorts of situations sometimes, and again, it’s hard because I think a lot of times, my female colleagues get questioned in ways when they’re seen, with these guys, out, in ways that I do not get questioned. And I think a lot of that is totally unfair.”
He also warned about the potential ripple effect, adding, “And if this is what it looks like, then this is really bad for all the women who are doing it on the level.” He continued, “Dianna’s done such a good job covering the league, but if that line was crossed, well then she’s screwing over a lot of other women. It’s going to make people make assumptions about a lot of other women that don’t deserve to have those assumptions made about them.”
The story now sits at an uncomfortable intersection of perception, policy, and timing. It is no longer just about what happened at a resort, but how quickly organisations respond when optics and credibility collide.
