NEW DELHI: The Seattle Seahawks have chosen Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their new head coach, according to a person familiar with the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity as the team has not officially announced the hiring.
At just 36 years old, Macdonald will become the youngest head coach in the NFL, succeeding Pete Carroll, who was let go after 14 seasons in charge of the Seahawks. Macdonald has spent the past two years overseeing Baltimore's defense, culminating in an impressive season with the NFL's best regular-season record and an appearance in the AFC championship game, where they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.
While this will be Macdonald's first head coaching position at any level, he has been part of successful coaching staffs, notably working with John Harbaugh in Baltimore and spending a season with Jim Harbaugh's staff at the University of Michigan.
Macdonald emerged as a top candidate for the Seahawks' coaching position, and his hiring comes after interviews with other potential candidates, including Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
One of the challenges for Macdonald will be how well he integrates with an organization that has been shaped by Pete Carroll's coaching philosophy for over a decade. Seattle's general manager, John Schneider, has emphasized the importance of maintaining Carroll's culture within the team.
Known for his aggressive defensive style, Macdonald will be tasked with revitalizing a Seahawks franchise that has faced stagnation in recent years. Despite Carroll's successful tenure, the team has struggled to advance deep into the playoffs. The Seahawks missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons in 2023 and finished with a 9-8 record.
Macdonald's defensive expertise is expected to improve a Seahawks defense that faced challenges in the previous season. However, equally crucial will be identifying a creative offensive coordinator who can maximize the potential of key players like quarterback Geno Smith, wide receivers DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and running backs Zach Charbonnet and Kenneth Walker III. The Seahawks aim to rebound under Macdonald's leadership and reclaim their status as contenders in the highly competitive NFC West division.
