Mark Schlereth Calls for Browns to Cut $15M Kicker After Another Missed Opportunity

Former NFL player Mark Schlereth criticized Cleveland Browns kick... Read More
Mark Schlereth isn't the kind of guy to keep quiet, and if you know his history, you won't be surprised. The man is a three-time Super Bowl winner and a former Denver Broncos lineman who's witnessed it all. Now, he spends his days speaking out against what he doesn't like in the NFL, and this week, it was Cleveland's kicker, Dustin Hopkins.

After Hopkins missed two key field goals against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Schlereth went straight to social media with a strong take:
“Cleveland needs to cut their kicker right now. Go for every fourth down and go for two on any score.”

Ouch. That's some harsh advice. But to be fair, Hopkins hasn't been having the best time lately.

Let's talk about those missed kicks. In the Steelers game, Hopkins missed a 38-yarder in the first half and a 43-yarder in the third. Sure, those aren't the easiest kicks in the world, but they're definitely ones you expect a pro to make.

It's not one game, either. This season, Hopkins has been hit-or-miss—literally. He's nailed 16 out of 23 field goals so far, which isn't exactly stellar. He's been a bit better with extra points, making 14 out of 16, but even that doesn't scream reliability. When your team's already having a tough season, those missed opportunities hurt even more. And boy, the Browns know about tough seasons.

Not A Great Season For Cleveland Fans

The Browns have been on one big struggle this season, to say the least. With only three wins and nine losses so far, nothing is clicking for them since Week 1. Losing quarterback Deshaun Watson didn't help; however, even before losing him, they were failing to get it going.

And it's not just the kicker. The Browns had problems all over the field. Sure, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy did have a monster game recently with 9 catches for 235 yards, but that wasn't enough to save them from a 41-32 loss to the Broncos. To make matters worse, Jeudy took to Instagram to celebrate his big stats after the loss, and Schlereth was quick to call it "selfish.”

"Celebrating your stats on Instagram in a game your team just lost is about the most selfish unaware wide receiver thing I’ve ever seen and why they moved on!" Schlereth tweeted.

It's already been a frustrating season for Cleveland fans, and those comments just add to the list. Whether they will actually go through with changes like dumping Hopkins or bigger issues are at play, one thing is for sure: this team has a lot to mend.
