Kyler Murray injury update: Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon confirms star QB done for 2025 season, future in doubt

Arizona Cardinals' 2025 season faces a significant setback as star quarterback Kyler Murray is officially out for the year due to a persistent foot injury. This development forces the team to re-evaluate their quarterback future, including contract implications and potential trade scenarios, as they navigate the remainder of the season and plan for 2026.

The Arizona Cardinals’ 2025 season has taken a major blow, as star quarterback Kyler Murray will not play again this year. Murray, sidelined since Week 5 with a foot injury sustained against the Tennessee Titans, recently underwent additional testing and sought a second medical opinion. With recovery not progressing as expected, the former No. 1 overall pick’s season is officially over, leaving the Cardinals to reassess their quarterback situation.Head coach Jonathan Gannon provided clarity on Murray’s status during a Friday press conference. “Kyler underwent more tests this week and even went out of state for another opinion,” Gannon said. “Unfortunately, his foot isn’t improving enough for him to return, so he’ll be done for the year.” Gannon expressed disappointment but emphasized that the team’s focus remains on finishing the season strong while evaluating next steps for the franchise.

Kyler Murray’s foot injury forces Cardinals to evaluate QB future, contract, and trade options

Kyler Murray, the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, has delivered standout moments despite battling injuries. He earned Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021 and led the Cardinals to a playoff appearance in 2021. However, consistency has been a challenge, and this latest injury raises questions about his long-term role in Arizona.
From a financial perspective, Murray’s contract complicates the Cardinals’ decision-making. He is guaranteed $36.8 million for the 2026 season, with $19.5 million of his 2027 base salary guaranteed if he remains on the roster five days after the new NFL league year begins. Releasing him before June 1 would result in a $57.7 million dead cap hit, while a post-June 1 release lowers the 2026 impact to $50.5 million and adds $7.2 million in 2027. A potential trade could free $35.3 million in salary cap space while only costing $17.9 million in dead money, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With Kyler Murray sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Cardinals must make strategic decisions regarding their franchise quarterback. The team will need to weigh options between retaining him long-term or pursuing a trade, with salary cap implications and roster planning playing a critical role in shaping Arizona’s direction for the 2026 season. Also Read: Jayden Daniels injury update: NFL insider Adam Schefter reveals Commanders QB status for Week 14 against Vikings
