An Instagram account called “VT” recently shared a mind-blowing fact [could be a rumor] about
The Matrix actor Keanu Reeves and the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. They wrote, “While filming The Replacements, Keanu Reeves committed fully to the role of quarterback Shane Falco, putting himself through intense football training to make the performance believable.
His dedication and natural athleticism reportedly impressed real NFL coaches, including staff linked to the Baltimore Ravens, who even invited him to consider a real-life tryout. Reeves ultimately turned it down to stay focused on acting, but for a moment, Hollywood nearly lost Neo to the NFL.”
What is method acting? Keanu Reeves nearly landed Lamar Jackson’s role in Ravens
Method acting is when an actor immerses himself in the character he portrays to create an authentic display. That’s what Reeves did for Shane Falco in the 2000 comedy film
The Replacements. He became so involved in Falco’s character that he reportedly got a real-life tryout with the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
Back then, there was no Lamar Jackson. He would have landed Trent Dilfer’s role. But the Fresno State alumnus led the Ravens to a Super Bowl XXXV win that year, defeating the New York Giants 34-7. The Los Angeles Times said Dilfer “wasn’t elite, but he didn’t make costly mistakes and was supported by a dominant defense.”
So maybe Reeves did have a chance after all. Baltimore did not re-sign Dilfer the next season, even though he won a Super Bowl for them. Again, maybe the
Good Fortune actor did have a slight chance. But what did he say? How did he feel about the offer? Let’s find out.

“I love acting,” Reeves told the New York Post’s Megan Turner in 2000. “And I love it more and more, so it’s great to have the opportunity to do it. And I got to have some really great acting experiences this past year, like working with Mr. Hackman in The Replacements.
I’d never played football, [but] I really wanted everyone watching the film to believe that Shane Falco was a quarterback. To go to training camp was a way for me to learn by character.
I started to learn the dynamics of the team, who sits where, how you go to the field, who gets taped up, how people get warmed up, what the dynamics are between all the different players.
There were different kinds of pain. During the ‘The Replacements’ training, I had six ice packs in my freezer. At the end of the day, I’d sit down and wrap my arm, my knees, sometimes my feet. I had a 240-pound lineman in cleats stepping on me.
I thought that all the characters in this film had heart; these people felt real. They all felt like they came from a situation of loss. They had a reality to them that I related to.”
Was Keanu Reeves offered an NFL tryout, or was it just a rumor?
During a 2024 interview with Sports Illustrated, the
John Wick actor was asked, “Rumor is you were so impressive as a QB, the Ravens offered you a tryout…”
“No, that’s absolutely ridiculous,” Reeves replied. “I got okay, but that’s ridiculous. Yes! Yes! Yeah! I was out there. Blue 87! [throwing the ball] Like 50-yard outs no problem.
In 2013, ESPN’s Matt Miller reported on X: “I leave you with this: Keanu Reeves was offered a tryout at QB with the #Ravens while filming “The Replacements”.”
In Oct. 2024, an Instagram account called WASTED also shared the news, “Keanu Reeves was reportedly so good at quarterback while shooting the movie “The Replacements” that the Baltimore Ravens invited him to a tryout in 2000.”
They captioned the post: “While filming The Replacements, Keanu Reeves underwent rigorous football training to accurately portray quarterback Shane Falco. His commitment and natural athleticism didn’t go unnoticed, even catching the attention of NFL coaches, including those with the Baltimore Ravens.
So impressed by his skills, they extended an invitation for him to try out for a real-life position on the team. However, Reeves turned down the offer to remain focused on his acting career, leaving fans to wonder how close he came to trading Hollywood for the football field! [camera emoji].”
