NEW DELHI: South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack is reportedly making the move to the University of Alabama to serve as the defensive coordinator under new head coach Kalen DeBoer. The news comes after Wommack's successful three-season tenure with the South Alabama Jaguars, where he transformed the program into a competitive force in the Sun Belt conference.
Wommack, 36, leaves South Alabama on a high note, having guided the Jaguars to a historic 2022 season. Under his leadership, the team achieved a remarkable 10-3 record and secured its first-ever bowl victory in program history with a dominant 59-10 win over Eastern Michigan in the New Orleans Bowl.
The Jaguars' strong defensive performance was a standout feature, allowing just 21 points per game and limiting opposing quarterbacks to less than 60% completion.
South Alabama's athletic director, Joel Erdmann, expressed gratitude for Wommack's contributions, stating, "I deeply appreciate Kane’s service to our program, university, and city. His efforts propelled us forward, and we wish him and [wife] Melissa the very best."
Wommack's coaching prowess extends beyond his successful stint with South Alabama. Notably, he and Kalen DeBoer have a history of collaboration, having previously worked together at Indiana. During the 2019 season, when DeBoer served as the offensive coordinator for the Hoosiers, Wommack was the defensive coordinator, contributing to Indiana's eight-win season—the program's first since 1993.
Alabama's new head coach, Kalen DeBoer, wasted no time in assembling his coaching staff, securing the services of both offensive and defensive coordinators in a short span. Ryan Grubb, the former offensive coordinator at Washington, is reportedly set to join DeBoer in Tuscaloosa to lead the Crimson Tide's offense. Grubb has been DeBoer's offensive coordinator for the past four seasons at Washington and Fresno State.
With these coaching additions, the Crimson Tide looks poised to build on its storied football legacy under the leadership of Kalen DeBoer, who recently took over the reins from the legendary Nick Saban. A
