John Harbaugh rumors emerge as insider links his availability to Mike McDaniel firing

Speculation around the Miami Dolphins’ next head coach has intensified after a prominent NFL insider linked John Harbaugh’s sudden availability to the firing of Mike McDaniel. While Miami has publicly framed the decision as part of a broader reset, the timing has fueled league-wide chatter that Harbaugh could be a serious option.

The Dolphins officially parted ways with McDaniel after a disappointing 7-10 finish in the 2025 season, their second straight losing campaign. McDaniel, who was hired in 2022, finished with a 35-33 regular-season record and went 0-2 in the playoffs. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Harbaugh’s unexpected exit from the Baltimore Ravens may have played a role in Miami’s timing. Harbaugh was fired after 18 seasons in Baltimore, following a dramatic late-season loss that kept the Ravens out of the playoffs.

“With John Harbaugh available, and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross’ ties to the family, he now looms as a key candidate for Miami,” Rapoport wrote, adding that his availability could have been “a reason to fire a coach.”



That comment quickly set off speculation across the league, especially given Harbaugh’s resume as a Super Bowl-winning coach with a reputation for consistency and culture-building.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has well-documented ties to the Harbaugh family. Ross previously showed interest in John’s brother, Jim Harbaugh, during an earlier coaching search. He is also a University of Michigan alumnus, strengthening the personal connection, as Harbaugh has deep roots in the state.



These links have made Harbaugh an easy name to connect with Miami, even before the Dolphins formally begin their coaching search.

However, not everyone agrees that Harbaugh’s availability directly triggered McDaniel’s firing. ESPN insider Jeff Darlington reported that Miami has not yet contacted Harbaugh or his representatives.



According to Darlington, the Dolphins are determined that McDaniel’s dismissal was based on internal evaluation and performance trends, not a reaction to the Ravens’ decision. Miami plans to first hire a new general manager before launching a full head coaching search, suggesting a slower, more deliberate process.

For now, the Dolphins are entering another crucial offseason with pressure mounting on ownership to get the next hire right. Whether that path leads to Harbaugh remains unclear. Still, with a proven coach suddenly on the market and Miami seeking stability, the rumors are unlikely to fade anytime soon.
