Joe Burrow lands Pro Bowl honor despite missing half the season, igniting NFL debate

Much like Shedeur Sanders, Joe Burrow was out of weekly matchups for most of the season. For a long stretch, the Cincinnati Bengals looked like a team searching for its identity without its franchise quarterback. Cincinnati adjusted under Joe Flacco’s presence, but could not book its spot in the Super Bowl. Just when it seemed the season would be defined by what Burrow missed, the NFL delivered news that no one saw coming.

Just days before the Pro Bowl, Burrow’s name suddenly reappeared on one of the league’s biggest stages, setting off confusion, debate, and fresh conversation about how late-season performances are valued.

Joe Burrow was limited this season because of injury, but his Pro Bowl selection brings him to the spotlight.

The NFL confirmed on Sunday that Burrow had been added to the AFC roster for the 2026 Pro Bowl Games, scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. As per Insider Mike Petragalia’s X post:

“Joe Burrow will join Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins at the Pro Bowl Games in SF,”



The timing raised eyebrows across the league, especially because the announcement arrived just one day after veteran quarterback Joe Flacco earned his first career Pro Bowl selection.

The star QB was out for 9 straight games from Week 4 through Week 12 with a toe injury that forced the Bengals to rework their O-line and rely on other QB’s. By the time voting for the Pro Bowl likely closed, Burrow had barely returned, which left him buried in the early rankings and seemingly out of contention.

Over the last six weeks of the season, Burrow produced one of the most reliable stretches by any QB in the league. He led the NFL with 152 completions, tied for second in TD passes with 15, ranked third in passing yards with 1,620, and finished fifth in completion percentage at 68.2 per cent and passer rating at 102.2.


Throughout the season, the star QB completed 173 of 259 passes for 1,809 yards, 17 TD, and five interceptions, finishing with a 100.7 passer rating in just eight starts. The production, coupled with his late surge, made his omission impossible to justify once roster spots opened.

Cincinnati now sends four players to the Pro Bowl. Along with Burrow and Flacco, wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins earned selections after anchoring a passing attack that stayed competitive despite constant changes under center. Chase finished with 125 receptions for 1,412 yards and eight touchdowns, while Higgins posted 59 catches for 846 yards and 11 scores, despite working with three different quarterbacks.


Burrow’s selection marks his third Pro Bowl appearance, following honours in 2022 and 2024. He now joins Ken Anderson, Andy Dalton, and Boomer Esiason as the only Bengals quarterbacks to reach that milestone.
