The Kansas City Chiefs heiress, Gracie Hunt, is navigating an unimaginable tragedy following the devastating loss of her 9-year-old relative, Janie Hunt, who was among those killed in the Central Texas floods during the July 4th weekend. The heartbreaking event has sent shockwaves across the nation, uniting thousands in grief and support for the Hunt family.
Gracie Hunt turns to God after losing cousin
Janie was attending Camp Mystic, a Christian summer retreat, along with 26 other girls when the region was struck by flash floods. A sudden surge in the nearby river claimed multiple lives, including Janie—who was closely related to the late oil magnate William Herbert Hunt and current Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.
Gracie, 26, took to Instagram to share a deeply emotional tribute, opening her heart in a moment of raw vulnerability. Known for her devotion to faith and humanitarian work, she confronted the difficult questions many ask in moments of profound loss.
"Some days, it's hard to understand how the world can hold both so much beauty and so much pain. How can the same God who created the stars and set the planets in motion allow such deep suffering?" she reflected.
In the face of such darkness, Gracie sought refuge in Scripture, citing passages from Romans 8 and 2 Peter 3:13—both pointing toward healing, resurrection, and the promise of renewal.
"The truth is, we live in a broken world—one that groans for redemption. Following Jesus doesn't spare us from pain, but it means we never face it alone," she shared.
Her message ended with a note of enduring faith:
"Even in the darkest valleys, we hold on to the hope that this is not the end of the story."
Gracie's mother, Tavia Hunt, also broke her silence online, mourning the loss of “a precious little Hunt cousin” along with some of Janie’s young friends. “Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives,” she wrote. “Jesus be near.”
The Hunts, known not only for their influence in the NFL but also for their strong Christian values and close-knit family ties, have been surrounded by prayers and tributes from across the country—including many from the sports community.
With over 100 lives lost across six counties, the Texas floods now stand among the deadliest natural disasters in recent U.S. memory. But amid the ruin, voices like Gracie’s continue to remind the world of hope, faith, and love—even in unbearable sorrow.
