Tyreek Hill is a very skilled NFL player who has faced numerous ups and downs. He had allegations of committing domestic violence during college and child abuse in the Chiefs. Moreover, he showed signs of off-field altercation with his Dolphins team. With all these challenges, Hill remains a talented and dynamic player in the NFL.
Did Tyreek Hill really abuse his son?
On March 15, 2019, Tyreek Hill was investigated by police for battery involving Crystal Espinal's 3-year-old son, who suffered a broken arm. The Chiefs permitted Hill to report to the team's offseason program in April, although the situation involved him.
The investigation resulted in Hill and Espinal losing custody of their son temporarily. The Johnson County, Mo., district attorney declared neither would be charged with child abuse, but the investigation stayed open, since the DA was not able to prove the perpetrator.
An audio recording aired on a local TV station in which Tyreek Hill's star wide receiver's fiancée accused him of abusing their 3-year-old son. The recording emerged one day after prosecutors said they believed abuse had occurred in Hill's home last month but that they could not press charges because it was unclear who committed the crime.
In the recording, Espinal asked him, "Why does he say 'Daddy did it'?" Hill responded, "I don't know. He says Daddy does a lot of things." "Like what? A 3-year-old is not going to lie about what happened to his arm," Espinal said. In another part of the audio, Espinal said her son was "terrified" of Hill. Hill replied back in the recording, saying, "You need to be terrified of me, too, b----.”
Tyreek Hill issues statement maintaining his innocence
The Chiefs suspended Hill indefinitely, stating he would not participate in team activities for the foreseeable future. The team's CEO and chairman, Clark Hunt, was eventually silent for several days after, stating that the team would make the right decision at the right time. Hill's attorney released a four-page statement to the NFL that dismissed the child abuse claims levied against Hill by Espinal. At that point, it was not known to what extent the league was investigating the matter.
"I love and support my family above anything," said Hill, who maintained all along he was innocent of committing a crime, via his attorney's statement. "My son's health and happiness is my number one priority. I want to thank the Kansas City Chiefs, my attorneys, my agent and my union for supporting me through this. My focus remains on working hard to be the best person for my family and our community I can be, and the best player to help our team win.”
Prosecutors later said that the child abuse investigation involving Hill was inactive, and Hill would not be charged. Hill was set to meet with the NFL on June 26, and he met for eight hours and said it was a good day for him. The NFL announced on July 19 that Hill would not be suspended pending the investigation, even though the NFL said it was deferring to local law enforcement.
