On Friday, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen had interviewed with the Washington Commanders for their vacant defensive coordinator role. Shortly after the news surfaced, Jones reacted on X with a blunt, two-word response that summed up the mood around the franchise. It was short, raw, and very telling.

How the 2025 season unraveled for Kansas City

For a team used to deep playoff runs, the 2025 campaign was a shock. The Chiefs finished 6-11 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2014. That failure has triggered a wave of uncertainty around the roster and the coaching staff, something Jones clearly isn’t happy about.


Earlier this week, Kansas City already moved on from wide receivers coach Connor Embree after ongoing issues with drops and inconsistency. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is also not expected to return, with reports linking him to multiple head coaching interviews. Now, Cullen’s name entering the rumor mill has only added to the sense of instability.

Jones’ reaction wasn’t just about one coach. It reflected a broader concern about losing trusted voices inside the building after a season that went completely off track.

Why Joe Cullen matters to Chris Jones

Joe Cullen has been with the Chiefs since 2022 and is widely respected for his work with the defensive front. Under his guidance, Jones enjoyed some of his most productive seasons, including multiple double-digit sack campaigns. Even during a down year in 2025, Jones still led the team in sacks and remained the most consistent presence on the defensive line.



The Chiefs’ run defense, despite the team’s struggles, held up reasonably well for most of the season. That made the possibility of Cullen leaving even harder to digest for Jones, who values continuity and trust on the coaching side.

The coaching rumors are only one part of a much larger issue. Head coach Andy Reid has already acknowledged that changes are coming after the poor season. Injuries played a major role too, most notably Patrick Mahomes suffering a torn ACL late in the year.



There are also unanswered questions about the future of veteran stars, including Travis Kelce, whose retirement talk continues to hover over the offseason.

For Chris Jones, the frustration is clear. The Chiefs aren’t just dealing with a bad season they’re fighting to protect a winning culture that now feels fragile.
