The Chiefs are not easing up this season. Instead, they are up for a major change. After a messy 6-11 season that showed loopholes on both sides of the ball, HC Andy Reid has taken a hard look at his staff and decided crucial changes were needed.
KC already lost many familiar faces earlier this month. Now, another name has been added to the list. This time, it is Kevin Saxton II, an offensive assistant who joined the league in 2023. This decision confirms one thing clearly. Reid is treating the upcoming season strictly.
Andy Reid makes his fifth coaching exit of the offseason
The update broke on Tuesday, when Chiefs columnist Sam McDowell shared the news on his X account. “Two more departures from Chiefs coaching staff: Mark DeLeone, assistant RBs coach last year, and Kevin Saxton, an offensive assistant,” McDowell wrote while covering the Chiefs' offseason developments.
DeLeone had already been let go a day earlier on Jan. 19. Saxton’s exit now becomes the fifth confirmed coaching departure under Reid this month.
Before Saxton, the Chiefs had already moved on from OC Matt Nagy, RB coach Todd Pinkston, WR coach Connor Embree, and DeLeone. That is a massive reset for a team that once defined stability.
Saxton has been with KC since 2023 after working at Benedict College, where he served as co-offensive coordinator and QB coach.
He worked closely with the Chiefs’ offensive unit, helping with game planning and player development behind the scenes.
While Saxton never held a play-calling role, his position put him in the middle of an offense that struggled badly in 2025. The Chiefs finished 24th in total offense and ranked near the bottom in red zone efficiency.
Big Red has not shared anything publicly about Saxton’s. But during his end-of-season press meet at Arrowhead, Reid's words hinted at some major reshuffling. “We have to be better. That starts with me. We are going to look at everything,” Reid said to the media.
That statement now explains every move since. The Chiefs have already had two new hires this offseason, including a senior offensive consultant and a new defensive quality control coach. More decisions are expected in the coming weeks as HC reshapes the staff around Mahomes. Also, Mahomes demanded a change a few days back in a media availability.
The 6-11 season will not define Kansas City. The response to it might.
